महाराष्ट्र केसरी किताब मिळवणं हे प्रत्येक पैलवानाच स्वप्न असतं. मग यासाठी प्रत्येक पैलवान जीवाची बाजी लावून सराव करत असतो. ग्रामीण भागातील गावागावामध्ये मोठमोठ्या यात्रा भरत असतात आणि यात्रांमध्ये कुस्त्यांचा फड ही परंपरा चालत आलेली आहे. मग वेगवेगळ्या तालमीत सराव करणारे मल्ल स्पर्धेत उतरतात, आपलं नशीब आजमावायला. कधी विजय होतो तर कधी प्रतिस्पर्धी अस्मान दाखवतो. मिळालेल्या पैशातून स्वतःचा खुराक भागवून घरचा प्रपंच करणं हीच सामान्य घरातून वरती आलेल्या पैलवानाची कहाणी. अश्या चांगल्या कुस्ती करणाऱ्या पैलवान लोकांनी गावचे व घराण्याचे नाव इतिहासात नोंदविले. त्या पैकीच एक तुफानी पैलवान पै. रावसाहेब मगर..

कुस्तीची महान परंपरा लाभलेले हे सोलापूर जिल्ह्यातील माळशिरस तालुक्यातील एक गाव. मल्लसम्राट रावसाहेब मगर आप्पांनी या गावात कुस्तीचा पाय घातला, तालीम उभी केली. आप्पांच्या तालमीत मोठे मोठे मल्ल सराव करू लागले, याच तालमीत तयार झालेले पै. रावसाहेब मगर यांनी गावाचं नाव इतिहासात नोंदवलं ते 1988 साली.
अतिशय गरीब शेतकरी कुटुंबात जन्मलेले रावसाहेब नाना हे लहानपणापासूनच अतिशय चपळ आणि जिद्दी पैलवान म्हणुन प्रसिद्ध होते. मोठ्ठा पैवालन म्हंटल की भरदार शरीरयष्टी, शंभर सव्वाशे किलो वजन अशी प्रतिकृती डोळ्यासमोर येते, पण नाना त्याला अपवाद. स्वतःच्या चपळतेच्या जोरावर अगदी कमी वयात आणि किरकोळ वजन असलेल्या नानांनी कित्येक मोठ्या पैलवानांना धूळ चारली होती व स्वतःचा एक वेगळाच आक्रमक पैलवान म्हणून ओळख निर्माण केली होती. पंचक्रोशीमध्ये चांगल नाव कमावलेले रावसाहेब नाना मगर यावर्षी पहिल्यांदाच महाराष्ट्र केसरी किताबासाठी आपलं नशीब आजमावणार होते.
1988 साली अहमदनगर ला 26 व्या महाराष्ट्र केसरी स्पर्धेचे आयोजन झालं. चपळ आणि आक्रमक खेळाच्या जोरावर नाना एक एक पैलवानाला चितपट करू लागले. उपउपांत्य फेरी, उपांत्य फेरी जिंकत नानांनी महाराष्ट्र केसरी स्पर्धेची अंतिम फेरी गाठली होती. नाना फायनलला गेले ही बातमी पेपरात आल्यावर सगळं निमगाव अहमदनगरला गेलं होत. आपल्या गावातला मल्ल महाराष्ट्र केसरीसाठी लढणार आहे म्हणून सगळ्यांच्या माना ताठ झाल्या होत्या.
अवघ्या 68 किलो वजनाचे पैलवान रावसाहेब नाना महाराष्ट्र केसरी किताबासाठी लढायला उतरले,. दंड थोपटून मैदानाला पळत एक राऊंड मारला. नानांची पिळदार चमकणारी शरीरयष्टी बघून मैदानातील लोकांनी टाळ्यांच्या गजरात त्यांचं स्वागत केलं. नंतर मैदान शांत झाल., तेवढ्यात कानठळी बसल एवढा मोठा दंड थोपटल्याचा आवाज झाला आणि मैदानात सव्वाशे किलो वजनाच्या बालारफिक शेख नावाच्या एका महान मल्लाची एन्ट्री झाली..
बलदंड बाला रफिक शेख यांना बघून मैदान अवाक झालं. 68 किलो वजनाचे नाना आणि सव्वाशे किलोचे पैलवान शेख यांच्यात ही महाराष्ट्र केसरीची लढत होती. आतापर्यंत झालेल्या सगळ्या महाराष्ट्र केसरी कुस्ती स्पर्धा लाल मातीत झाल्या होत्या. पण त्या वर्षीपासून महाराष्ट्र राज्य कुस्तीगीर परिषदेने महाराष्ट्र केसरीची लढत गादीवरती घ्यायचं ठरवलं होतं.
आजवर नानांनी सगळ्या कुस्त्या ह्या लाल मातीवर केल्या होत्या आणि शेवटची ही लढत गादीवर होणार म्हणाल्यावर नानांना फार दडपण आलं होतं. कारण त्यांना गादीवर कुस्ती खेळण्याचा कसलाच अनुभव नव्हता. त्यात त्यांचे प्रतिस्पर्धी असलेले मल्ल बालारफिक शेख हे फार नावाजलेले व अनुभवी पैलवान होते. बाला रफिक शेख यांच्याकडे बघितल्यावर नानाच्या चाहत्यांच्या मनात एक प्रकारची भीती निर्माण झाली होती.
कुस्तीला प्रारंभ झाला खडाखडी झाली. डाव प्रतिडाव चालू झाले. प्रचंड वजनाचे बाला रफिक शेख आपल्याला जड चालले आहेत हे नानांना जाणवायला लागलं. पण, त्यांनी चपळता दाखवत…. डावावर डोळ्याची पापणी लवती ना लवती तेवढ्यात बाला रफिक शेख यांना अस्मान दाखवलं आणि कुस्ती जिंकली.
अहमदनगरच्या मैदानात फार मोठा जल्लोष झाला कारण, बालारफिक शेख यांना पराभूत करणं ही अशक्यप्राय गोष्ट होती. ती रावसाहेब मगरांनी करून दाखविली होती. आतापर्यंतच्या महाराष्ट्र केसरी स्पर्धेत सर्वात कमी वजन असताना महाराष्ट्र केसरीची गदा मिळविलेले एकमेव पैलवान अशी इतिहासात नोंद झाली. शक्ती पेक्षा युक्ती श्रेष्ठ असते, हे नानांनी दाखवून दिलं.. आणि आमच्या निमगावचं नाव महाराष्ट्रात केलं…..
मातीतली माणसं कधीही मातीला विसरत नसतात. आज नानांना महाराष्ट्र केसरी किताब जिंकून 35 वर्ष झाली आहेत. आजही त्यांनी लाल मातीशी असलेली नाळ जपली आहे. त्यांनी गावात कुस्तीची परंपरा चालू राहावी, ग्रामीण भागातील पैलवानांना सुविधा मिळाव्यात म्हणून निमगावमध्ये महाराष्ट्र केसरी कुस्ती संकुल उभे केले आहे. आज त्या संकुलामध्ये नानांच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली 70 पैलवान सराव करीत आहेत. ही पोरं वेगवेगळ्या गावागावांतील मैदानं, स्पर्धा मारून येतात आणि कुस्ती झाल्यावर प्रतिस्पर्धी पैलवानाला अभिमानानं सांगतात..
